Travel in Scotland and the Start of the WHW

Getting to Milngavie, the start point for the West Highland Way, from Glasgow is very easy – it is only twenty minutes from the center of Glasgow by train. Alternatively walk to Milngavie it is a fairly easy walk, and a relaxing first day; see routes page for more information.

If you decide to drive to Milngavie you can leave your car near the police station (let them know), also there is a free car park at the Train station which is monitored by CCTV, safe but not guaranteed.

By Train

Traveling to Glasgow by train is normally fairly simple. It has direct connections to all the major cities in the UK, though it can be a very expensive way to travel. For example if you book well in advance it is much cheaper to fly from London than to take the train, and much quicker. When you finish the West Highland Way and get to Fort William, this is the most comfortable way to travel back to Glasgow.

By Air

Since the advent of cut price air carriers travel within Europe is fairly cheap and traveling to Glasgow is the same. Glasgow can be accessed from all over Europe by budget airlines. There are fewer transatlantic flights. The better option is fly to London, Dublin, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam; just check for onward flights before booking.

Traveling from Fort William afterwards is better done by Train or Bus. All the above links should help. As is usual the train is more comfortable, but always more expensive.
