The Scottish Highland for Skiing

Skiing is the most popular winter sport and there are plenty of countries in Europe which offer fantastic ski resorts. If it is a good snow year then Scotland is a great place for a ski holiday, so you are not disappointed by turning up and finding out there hasn’t been enough snow to ski, you could always check out the snow conditions before heading to the mountains.

Skiing in Scotland provides a good challenge for winter sport enthusiasts, they say if you can ski Scotland you can ski anywhere in the world. It has five ski areas, Cairngorms, Glencoe, Glenshee, The Lecht and the Nevis Range which offers the highest skiing in Scotland, with a variety of testing slopes and modern facilities.

The ski areas may be small but they offer some challenging skiing and the slopes provide the perfect place for beginners to start. It is a good place to try out skiing rather than forking out a fortune on going to a resort in the Alps only to find skiing is not for you. Heavy snowfalls can come as late as February or March meaning there is a good possibility that the season can last until Easter.

Once the snow has melted and spring comes around there is still plenty to attract the outdoors lover to any of the ski resorts in Scotland, they all offer some fantastic highland walks. Cairngorms is the largest National Park in Britain and boasts the most extensive range of high mountains which were forged by glaciers over 10,000 years ago. Glenshee is located in the heart of Scotland and is the perfect getaway location. Its landscape is spectacular and its facilities are unrivalled. Glencoe is the most famous and most impressively dramatic of all Scottish glens. It is the perfect place for keen walkers while Lecht has lots to offer including walking and mountaineering.

Recently more and more people have been booking last minute ski deals in an attempt to save money and take advantage of last minute snow judgements as to where the best snow is falling. The use of the internet these days with numerous last minute sites makes it a haven for those wanting to book late and there does tend to be a good choice of decent destinations and packages to suit every budget. Britain is conveniently located close to many European ski destinations which can be reached within a matter of hours, perfect for a quick getaway.
